The highest-performance heavy duty port in Northern Germany is located in Osterroenfeld near Rendsburg right by the Kiel Canal. It forms the core of a developing cluster of regenerative energies, especially wind energy. The port offers ideal site conditions for the transshipment of wind turbines and their components.
The port directly connects to the German highway network and is therefore ideal for the transshipment of heavy duty cargo such as wind turbine components, rotor blades, gearboxes, slewing rings and towers.
Via the Kiel Canal and the Elbe river, the port offers the opportunity to directly access the European inland waterways network. This advantage is increasingly being recognized and utilized in heavy goods transport.
The port is equipped with the currently largest heavy duty cranes in Northern Germany. A heavy duty zone of initially 2.5 hectares and later 6 hectares allow for easy handling, e.g. of complete wind turbines.
A commercial park of approx. 80 hectares directly adjoins the port, which offers considerable locational advantages to manufacturers of wind turbines or wind turbine components. The real estates close to the port are being contracted at favourable conditions on the basis of building lease contracts.
The combination of port and commercial park make it possible for the
first time to directly use the Kiel Canal as part of a continuous logistics chain. There are plans to also enable the transshipment of large numbers of containers.
